The ’60s were the best decade for football in England- until England won the World Cup and managers up and down the country began to choose functionality over freedom of expression. England’s win played a large part in ushering in a new era of systems and what some would refer to as negative tactics.

Some argue that the 1990s were a better decade, since football was reborn, and became a much better experience for the spectator with the advent of all-seater stadia. Italia ’90 and Euro ’96 captured the public’s imagination, and although Sky’s millions were beginning to filter through into the Premiership, the money had not yet corrupted the soul of football. Unlike today at the fag-end of the noughties.

I have to disagree about the ten years old thing, but only pedantically.

I was 8 and the 74 WC was a feckin belter. Gerd Muller. Cruyff. Neeskens. Beckenbauer. Zoff (what a keeper!).

Legendary names. No sponsorship hype. Proper tackling. Lots of dodgy barnets.

Ahhhh them was the days…

Does that hold good if you come from or support a country which has won a World Cup at any point in time that you were over ten years old?

I’m 39 and, for me, Italia 90 was amazing and proof that i could enjoy the game as an adult. I’d fallen back in love with the game during the late eighties despite the horrors – but liking football was about as socially acceptable as selling drugs to school kids. The 1990 World Cup made the country love the game again – but it wasn’t because of the football – these things rarely are – it was about New Order, Gazza and tellies being wheeled into pubs (they never left after that).

Indeed 1982 will be remembered as my epiphany of football. The time I realised that football was also played by our continental counterparts, and in a somewhat superior way at that. Rossi, Zico and Boniek ; Robson’s 27sec goal, Schumacher’s assault and Falcao’s veiny arms. Oh dear, that was a bit ‘jumpers for goalposts’.

Man City also won the League in the 60′s.

Same age and same World Cup for me mnb098mnb. Though impartial observers now tend to say Italia ’90 was pretty dull, which I think further proves the point.

I had never heard that expression before but it is spot on. My favourite World Cup by far is 1990. I am 28 years old.
